Cringleford Riding School
|
|
|
|

I'm a Norfolk born and bred writer currently researching a book on ponies and childhood, and I'm trying to find out what happened to Cringleford Riding School after 1997. I know that it closed due to a rates hike, but haven't been able to find a trace of any other business at the site. I can, however, see the layout of the stables on a Google satellite image Does anyone have any information? I don't live in the UK just now and wanted to make enquiries before I visited.

Yes, it closed after being hit with a massive rates bill. It had been run for several years by Paula Sykes, who, at one time, had been groom to Pat Smythe. I don't think any other business opened there after Paula closed it which is very sad as it had a good reputation.

Hi i used to work there. I had my horses there for years and am still in touch with Paula. She still lives there and has a few privately owned horses. As you know it was closed due to the increase in rates. It has never been replaced with a business of the same calibre. The good thing is that many of us who were there still remain in touch. It was certainly a place that holds years of many happy memories for many people. Hope this is of some use to you, if you need more info please ask.

Susanna, we have had a lady on the phone who used to run the Cringleford riding school who would like to get in touch with yourself, but currently has no internet access, if you are interested in getting in touch with her, please either email or ring the webdesk on 01603 772376 so that we can pass on the information.
Thankyou,
Tracey

Thank you for the responses! I will get in touch via the EDP. I think I was there between the mid 1980s and early 1990s and have many happy memories – I still remember the names of pretty much every pony in the place. On my last ride we went cantering on what was going to be the by-pass which went straight through one of the hacking routes.

In the 80's my little girl Lisa used to go to Cringleford riding school, my brother Pat and his wife Linda used to take her, i think she used to ride a little pony called Scrappy? Then occassionally my other daughter Amy used to ride there when she was little, and a few years back my little granddaughter Cerys Knight used to ride there and my little grandson Tyler Knight[Lisa's children] had some riding lessons there...they all enjoyed theirselves so much.

I was trying to think of all the ponies and horses I rode in my years there – it's a long list!
Smokey, Pickles, Red, Bluebell, Jasper, Dominic, Pegasus, Derwen, Dandy, Brown Ale, Cricket, Tommy, Orlando, Joe... I have a little heap of rosettes from gymkhanas and open days too.

Ah, sadly that's not me! I grew up in Costessey, and before Cringleford I went to the riding school up in the sand pits (now disappeared under a housing estate, I think). Bet I could name all the ponies there too!

Hi Susanna, well I wonder if I know you? I too grew up in Costessey and my first riding school was the one in the sandpits! I remember all the horses, plus Noddy, Wimpy, Woody and probably a few more if I put my mind to it. I'm (cough) 35 (just!) so I'm not sure if we are in the same age range. Please get in touch, it would be great to chew over the good times..... It took me long enough, but Cringleford never left me and I FINALLY got my own horse 9 years ago!

I forgot Noddy (he was very old when I was there), Wimpy and Woody! I think there was also an elderly horse called Abednego, to go with Meshack, but he was pretty much retired. I'm 31 so we might well know each other. One of my instructors at Costessey was the daughter of one of my teachers at Costessey Infants too, if that's an even further connection. From the sand pits I remember Tino, Gypsy, Ponto, Petita, that skewbald who bucked me off cantering down the long stubble field on Ringland Lane (how did I forget his name? I bounced, at any rate :) )... I also spent my teenage years riding around the area on an ex-Swannington Riding School pony called Mactavish, who belonged to a friend and had previously been owned by the Peruzzis. I think he might have been a bit notorious in the county because once at a show the Handy Pony judge pulled me aside, told me Tav had thrown her in the past and 'recommended that I get another show pony.' LOL!

There was definitely a Shadrach (bright bay) and Meshach (grey cobby thing, died of a heart attack with someone on him as they came back from a hack down that hill before the railway line if I remember rightly) but I'm not sure I remember the other one. I suppose for logical reasons it would be right. And Rocky, he was a good one and could jump really well. To be fair, I can't really remember going to the sand pits one very much - I do however remember being very frightened as one took off with me, so I wonder if it was the same pony! My Dad then got to know Jane Martin through work (her daughter Sarah rode/taught/kept her horses at Cringleford too) so I started down there and never looked back. I didn't go to Costessey Infants - I went to Stretton on Albemarle Road and then did the full stint at Norwich High until I was 18. I did, however, live on Camborne Close and so visited Peruzzi's horses down near the railway track regularly on my school holidays and weekends. I remember the day I found out that Cringleford was closing so vividly. I had my first car at the time, a black Metro, and I couldn't see for crying on the drive home. I so wanted to buy Jasper it hurt. Where do you live now? Do you get back to Norwich much? Do you still ride?

Shadrach is the old bay I was thinking of (so who was Abednego?), and I'm a former NHS girl too. Was there from 11 to 18 after Costessey Junior. I live in Berlin now, and am just in the process of booking my first ride in 11 years! And I think I would have fought you for Jasper :) I was just trying to write something about him – didn't he just do a speeded up walk for trot? It was like riding an armchair. :)
I wonder if anyone else who knew Mactavish will pass through the forum – 14-something hh bright red chestnut (think Highland cow) cob?
