Have you contacted the regimental museum, they may have the regimental muster roles from those dates.

Re: 1st Norfolk Regiment -1901

My grandfather was a Colour Sergeant (actually Colour Sergeant Sargeant) in Bombay in 1901.  He went back to the UK in 1904, to South Africa in 1905 to 1907, then to Hollywood, Ireland, where he discharged after 21 years.   Then to New Zealand in 1914, just in time to do it all again, and be wounded at Gallipoli.

Hope this helps,

Jim Duncan

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that info..... was your grandfather with the 1st Norfolk Reg?  If so you have filled in quite a few blanks for me there - with just a few minor adjustments we could be talking about the same person!  From what I can gather about my gt, gt, gt Uncle (name: Robert Thomas Howmans btw), he was born in 1872 in Norfolk England, he must have joined (or was he pressed? was that still common practise in those days??) up to the Norfolk's sometime around 1886-1890 because he just disappears from his family data.  I have his Australian Military records which state he was in the 1st Norfolk Regiment for 12 years.  He left England bound for Australia in 1909 and joined up with the Australian army in 1914 and was sent to Gallipoli where he was promoted to Regimental Company Sergeant Major.  Robert suffered from Epilepsy and was returned home to Australia in 1916 having been mentioned in despatches.   I still havent managed to find his military records in this country.

Regards,
Nancy.
