I have been promised a letter from Anne McIntosh as soon as she receives a response from the Secretary of State for the Environment.
I have been waiting for over two weeks since she contacted same.
The Conservative Party supports proper flood defence, at least that is what they say.
I am still unconvinced that they would take any real action to sort the problem of flooding into the future.

I hope that our interested few here know about the first ever East Coast initiative called for today, with all the bureaucrats from EEDA and the other tax dependents from NCC , as well as local groups present, if you did not know about the low porfile of this meeting, ministyer barbara Follett willbe present, but she has not got any money in her pockets, just more fine words.
The East coast suffers whilst they are talking. nevermind

I hope that our interested few here knew about the first ever East Coast initiative, surprise surprise, happening today stacked, with all the bureaucrats from EEDA and the other tax dependents from NCC, as well as local groups present, if you did not know about the 'low profile' of this meeting, minister Barbara Follett MP will be present, but she has not got any money in her pockets, just more fine words to calm down the irate electorate.
The East coast suffers whilst they are talking. Long standing campaigners like Pat Gowen, who for years been engaged in issue's surrounding coastal erosion were never invited to attend, nor did those who expressively voiced their interest to invest and plan coastal defenses, one wonders why. nevermind

I was most interested last week Nevermind when I was on the Broads I spoke to as many people as I could re the flooding proposals.Hardly anyone was aware of the proposals.I did speak to one man whose wife was a member of the R.S.P.B.and she was unaware of what they proposed. The couple did tell me that the R.S.P.B. had bought some land, including a marina near Stalham. As soon as the purchase was completed a board went up saying "No boating".I cannot verify that story but no doubt some local person will tell us.The next place to go will be the River Chet up to Loddon.R.S.P.B. reserves both side of the river, both draining into the Broads and the river just passable by two boats. If the trees and bushes are not cut back Loddon will be a no go area as far as navigation goes. When I saw the cliche who were attending the meeting you mention I thought then,it only wanted the R.S.P.B. there and the party would be complete.John

Do you think it is time yet to have a meeting of our own, or should we wait for the first major flood that drowns people?
I doubt we will get enough media publicity until people actually die because of these Muppet's.

cor blast me, that'll be a high tide Keith!
Personally from what I have heard of English Nature, The Environment Agency, Defra etc I doubt very much if any coherent single plan exists at all unless it is to create as many jobs for themselves as possible by taking over local drainage bodies ( so managers can ask for pay rises as they have more responsibility). The let it all flood to save money idea is planning by neglect, just as failing to maintain waterways in the Fens is planning by neglect, even if they have built a new sluice at St Germans. And they don't avoid using conservation bodies to excuse their actions either or to drum up favourable publicity in quarters that don't know any better eg proposing to return acres upon acres of hard won fenland near Burwell to the same state as Wicken Fen. The excuse being that little original fen still exists- (well that has been the plan for the last 400 years!) but in reality it will be a nice little place for an afternoon out for citizens of Cambridge. As for navigation-well as I think I said to Keith when I first waded into this forum, I don't foresee any shortage of sailing, I am just waiting for someone to say that a flooded Horsey/Somerton/Hickling will be a lovely sheltered place for sailing like Burnham Creek, thereby winning the support of the Chelsea tractor brigade and turning Martham into the next Burnham Market... All we can hope for is divine intervention in the form of a huge chunk dropping off the East Yorkshire coast or Gibralter Point so we get some extra deposition, because that lot in Westminster wont help us.

Good idea Keith.A meeting would be ideal but I am afraid in my case it would have to be at the week-end due to the travelling.Perhaps Jill could suggest a time and venue.John

Good idea, should this meeting place be in a good central placxe so many can attend, ideally with some public transport nearby?
Has anybody heard anything about Mondays meeting at Orbis enerhy in Lowestoft?
If that was the first ever meeting/ initiative of this kind, was Archant present and can we expect to hear anything of what was on the agenda?
There are many aspects to any such initiative and unless we organise some working groups at that meeting, we will end up talking to each other with not much direction at the end.
We need to propose pre emptive solutions to some of the problems and not copy the non cooperative models that are currently causing so much confusion, so we have to somehow publish the results, final or not, what do you say John?
If we would like to invite the proposer of the sustainable wash barrier to that meeting let me know and I will try my best to arrange it.
Should we invite the existing bodies like the RSPB,natural England, the EA,BA or are we working out a stand alone alternative position for proposals, from those who more likely going to be affected by flooding? whats the mood here? nevermind

The EDP did report what went on at the meeting Nevermind, check the archives if it doesn't show up on a scroll back of the news items.
