Whilst enjoying one of the warm days of this summer down on West Runton beach the kid pointed out to me how many little kids were wearing the above ( now easily and cheaply available from Tesco I noticed).
Well whatever happened to woollen swimmies that soaked up the water and getting blue with cold unless one raced up and down playing beach cricket etc. And to getting a bit of sun ? Is it cossetting or fashion this clobber more usually associated with cold water surfers?
These modern parents I don't know...

I would have thought it to be a good fashion direction that might just encourage more people to holiday in Norfolk gardener.
The county needs to make the most of the current economic dive and do what ever is needed to bring in outside money.
It is essential to help pay for flood defence.

Well now that children are confined to school for all except official holidays ( lest they enjoy themselves or because the mediocre curriculum imposed on schools can't be delivered in a shorter time or they have to be in school for ages to compensate for some of their lessons being delivered by un qualified staff-well whatever) you may have noticed that the holiday season is now much shorter in our resorts. Only oldies seem to be here now enjoying the Indian summers when the sea is still quite warm instead of young families taking advantage of the lower prices to take a break together ( increasingly difficult to co ordinate with both parents working)
So you could be right - perhaps those dinky suits would be good for olds fancying a late dip or essential beach wear for kids who will have to holiday in early season or wait till late October half term hols to be able to enjoy our beaches.
All surf's up dude no doubt.

Well,back again.What a great week apart from the torrential lashing we got last Sunday.Of course,where should we be but crossing Breydon Water.Visibility 50yds.Never mind,all part of the fun.It does take the shine off of the holiday a little bit when the water is so high.Great Yarmouth bridges do get a bit scary when there is so little headroom.[3"]Any way back to the Broads report.I read in the E.D.P. while I was down there that the Broads Bill has had a reading in the Lords and passed without a vote.I understand that the next move is the committee stage.Any comments from Jamie?As far as children being confined to school.You would not have thought so.There were plenty of children enjoying themselves and who can blame the parents.The price of the boats are increased by up to £250 in two weeks time.John

That price increase is a blow john.
It will not help increase the holiday industry in Broadland.
If the facilities were improved and included the hire boat companies, I am sure there would not be a need to make the prices so high.
More electric boats and re-charging sites with a full range of products and services would help.

I suspect Keith, that John was responding to my post about the restrictions on authorised absence from school depleting the number of families holidaying in autumn and that the price rise he refers to is temporary for the one week of the half term holiday which starts in two weeks time. Prices will have dropped marginally after the summer vacation and will drop again after the autumn half term. The holiday companies all from country cottage to foreign villa (AFAIK) hoik their prices up for the hols- you can check on any table of cottage rentals etc. All good business but not so nice for couples who have to co ordinate their annual leave each other and with school holidays.

Not only that Gardener,but there are schools who hire 3 or 4 boats at a time during the school holidays.These kids really enjoy their holidays on the Broads as well as the teachers.It is a lot for the parents to pay out when you take a 6 berth boat [2teachers and 4 children] The cost would be about £700 boat hire,£120 fuel plus food. That would be approx.£250 per person,a lot of money for parents to find.Plus remember it is dark by 5.30p.m.A lot of work for the teachers considering they are on holiday themselves.John

Is there an address for contributions Jill ? I was chatting to an elderly friend the other day , who drove ducks in the war- I think in the D Day landings or just after- and remembering the ones that used to give trips at Hunny. Be very handy for your wardens one of them maybe!
Quite agree with you John. Increasing problem with schools not being able to run field trips or holidays because of the expense, insurance, staff unwilling to face the possibility of litigation and the huge amount of paperwork associated with risk assessment. I gather many are finding that when the price for 5 days on a school trip approaches what parents might spend taking a child on a package holiday with the whole family then the school trip has to be given a miss.
hi to Keith and John- this may be the only refuge on the forum from the verbal sand in a sock that appears to be inhibiting contributions from former posters on other topics!

A dukw would certainly be useful to the wardens.
I think there is still one somewhere in Yarmouth, it used to be on Southtown rd.
I would love to have one for giving trips again and doubling as a rescue vehicle with the wardens.
Unfortunately those ducks still around are pretty old now and probably in need of major work.
One of the best things Chevrolet ever did.

Good luck Jill.Keep in touch. Unpacking my bags yesterday after my holiday I found Friday's edition of the E.D.P. and inside was a letter to the editor re Potter Heigham Bridge. Mr.Porter of Hemsby says that as one who regularly navigates a 40' Vintage Cruiser under the bridge,he fails to see what is difficult about negotiating the bridge.He then says that the real pleasure of cruising the upper Thurne is that the bridge prevents the gin palaces accessing the fragile environment.Well I have got news for Mr.Porter,Martham boats could not get under the bridge last week and they are vintage cruisers.Not only that,the Bridge Pilots had a notice displayed "No craft behond this point" Most hire craft are now 12' beam whereas the older boats were 10'beam.A big difference when negotiating a arched bridge.Coupled with that there is a notice in the majority of hire boat manuals stating that the boat must NOT be taken under Potter Heigham [With or without a pilot] What I say is move or demolish the bridge so that we can ALL ENJOY THE TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT. Just one more little point,and that is there are two public houses on or near the Upper Thurne,I am sure they would welcome more business.Plus the shops in Martham.John

I knew that you would get what I was getting at Keith.He will get tranquil silence in a watery grave.Incidentally,I have just received a letter this morning from the Shadow Environment Secretary,Anne Mc.Intosh saying that she wants quick and honest answers to the flooding and realigning of the North Norfolk Coast from the Environment Secretary and the Secretary of State for the Environment.Keep the pressure on I say.It may lead to nothing but at least we can say we tried.John
