Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
So much for the Environment Agencies promises to continue with flood protection for the next 50 yrs. They have now announced that they are abandoning their plans to protect the Blythe Estuary and Southwold.Where next? i suspect East Anglia.Again valuable farm land and property will be lost to the sea and has stated before, very little chance of compensation.Still it must be good news for the Booming Bittern.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

The first time the sea breaks through and floods the whole area will be when they change their tune John.

The sad thing is that it is obvious to everyone that this is going to happen.

How on earth can it be official policy to drown the subjects of our country?

Something has to be done to get rid of the goons in government.

If  those M.Ps serving the areas concerned had got anything at all about them they would be fighting the proposals tooth and nail Keith. The 50yr.promise was a written statement by DEFRA who should now be hauled before the select committee and disbanded forthwith.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

I despair of our local MP's John.

Norman Lamb has done a little but it needs a lot more to make the changes needed to save East Anglia from flooding.

I am certain that few people in the area are aware of the dangers as yet and it is a scandal that the media is not making it THE major issue.

While expressing my sympathy to all of those people affected by flooding,is this not a wake up call to the whole country as to what state our country is in.Rivers, canals and streams have been neglected for years, flood plains built on,miles of concrete roads with insufficient drainage, coastal erosion, the list goes on.DEFRA and the Environment Agency should be ashamed of themselves and heads should roll.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

Rising sea level will effect the efficiency of fresh water run off throughout the country john.

It will slow down and from this we can expect increasing inland flooding everywhere.

All the past bad planning and concrete coverage will of course add to this.

There has been extreme neglect keeping the water ways free and much of this neglect has been concealed with statements on conservation that hide the coming disaster for the useless government.

DEFRA and the other government bodies working for government have only one priority, saving money!

Unfortunately, due to the geology of the UK, East Anglia is in the worst position to experience major flooding from all the causes.

It is also the lowest on the list for government investment and protection.

The latest surrender by government to the elements proves this beyond doubt.

Busy John and will be for next few weeks but I will keep an eye out for news about the state of the rivers but I daresay Mr Campbell will be better placed in October. I envy you- you could well hit on the best time of the year for your hols.

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
We could certainly do with some good news Gardener. Now that the Environment Agency has abandoned all of the flood defence schemes on the east coast [except London].The police have opposed the siren scheme for Walcott etc.As for my holiday,I just can't wait.I have heard that they are working on St.Olaves road bridge, reducing the headroom by 18" and the Somerleyton and Reedham swing bridges will be out of operation from mid October.Lets just hope that the river levels remain low.John

Perhaps he's gone to work for the BA!

Looks like the ex May Gurney manager is or has left already, joining the incredibly high staff turnover at Colgate. If he has left then I wonder how the BA's much vaunted dredging programme stands?

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

Yes john

The police actually have come out at last and said they will not sound the sirens

The local NNDC council have also said that all flood wardens should be registered to them which means that they have been instructed that this would mean

They are not allowed to go into flood water

They must have permission to even go out of their doors, acting as flood wardens

They cannot use the boat we all have contributed towards

They have to undergo training from the council

Their only alternative was to resign if they did not agree

As the flood wardens received accolades for their bravery during the sea surge and the council and police received scathing criticisms from their own colleagues in Norfolk County Council for their many failings, you could see how it sticks in the craw to have to do what these inept people instruct.

They were also told that if they resigned, they could not act as flood wardens and could not request emergency help or evacuation centres to be opened as the council would refuse, even if it meant the polulation would suffer.

Therefore an emergency meeting was called last Friday for the village of Walcott and the flood wardens had 100% backing to go independant and their association WEVA Walcott Emergency Volunteer Association has taken over our own emergency cover.  I will not say what measures were agreed but it seems they have nearly every angle already covered and we feel far safer in their hands than in the inept and lacking organisation of the council, Environment Agency and Police.

We also have arranged our own emergency centre and can quite easily do without their interference.  As villagers, we can call the emergency services ourselves who must respond and having a laugh said if the wardens leave their homes, we will call the police, who will comeout to arrest them and we will have far more police in that scenario than when we were flooded last year.

The council have acted with astonishment over this development and have said they will speak to the wardens as their instuctions were in the light of insurance committments but in all honesty they have known of this for many months that it was on the cards and I know from my own experiences that they are very economical with the truth as sadly are the police as well.

I have put my home up for sale, it is a shame but inevitable.

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

Re Jenny.I have just read on the BBC/Norfolk news that the RSPB are going to clean out all of the dykes and ditches between Surlingham and Cantley.Surely that is the responsibility of the B.A. What a good job they have a band of volunteers.I have a good idea for Colegate,Guy Fawkes comes to mind.

Re Jill. What a shame that you have had to put your house up for sale.[Bang goes next years holiday] I hope you find a buyer. It is amazing how the councils bring in the old insurance and health and safety law when you want to do anything voluntary and yet when they employ sub contractors those laws are thrown out of the window.Best wishes and good luck to your friends.John
