Tescos and Sheringham.

Baconsdozen 15/05/2006, 1:14 PM

So a letter signed by someone at the council (No one knows who) clears the way for Tescos to ruin Sheringham with concrete.I wonder who signed it, and why.

If as assumed nobody knows who signed this letter then surely it canot be legally binding as it could have been signed by a person without the authority to do so.

The whole thing stinks.Tescos wited a hell of a long time before they produced this letter, maybe they were waiting for the ink to dry.

Perhaps the answer may lay in the 'secret' strategy meeting held by councillors recently.

Instead of conducting their meeting in the brand-new, purpose-built, sound-equipped council chamber, they decided to travel to an hotel just south of Norwich where several thousand pounds were spent on the little jaunt!

There are many, many strange decisions agreed at the 'aircraft carrier' just up the road from where I live, that previous taunts and claims of backhanders appear the only reasonable explanation that makes sense.

And just a tip for you: it is no good questioning any councillor about any decision because if you do get an answer it will be one prepared by the council's own legal department.

If you don't get an explanation you can be certain the councillor has not yet been fully briefed!

There is no doubt that Sheringham will suffer with the introduction of a giant supermarket. The one island of calm midst the plethora of towns with outskirts supermarkets, it is always a pleasure to travel there and wander the streets looking into the windows of countless and various little shops.

The centre of Cromer is now full of charity shops, banks and building societies - and many seasonal shops offering cheap and tacky 'souvenirs' for a few months before closing down.

I fear the same is about to happen at Sheringham. Shame on all the councillors, I say.

I might look darf but I ain't stuput!

If Sheringham people are angry at the new Supermarket yet to be built then this story might not be over as yet.

Non violent direct action has added hundred of thousands to development costs, an activist who accidentally spilled a kilo of salt whilst the concrete was poured into a vital load carrying section, set back the building work by weeks. Sherignham does not have to have this supermarket for years and when it is open they can still demonstarte outside and make it the most hated Tesco's in Britain, what a claim for tesco's advertising and their overall standing. If they force shops into places where they are not wanted by the majority, then they should be made to feel it in their pockets.

But thats not how it is gonna run and we all know it. The shop will be opened, maybe even by the secret cabal that said yes to it, it will perform slow for a while and then the masses will vote with their feet for cheap and chearfull foodstuffs, cramming their shopping trolleys and forgetting about their small shops, as long as they can buy cheap BBQ coals, they are happy.

Me thinks that compulsory voting for Sheringahm is a must and that these, with secrecy obsessed councillors, should find themselves put out to grass. nevermind

Isn't that the acid test though. No matter how much the chattering classes protest and complain about Tescos the customers still come. In their thousands too. If these stores were really so unpopular they would quickly go out of business. The general public appear to like shopping in large supermarkets to the extent that they often travel some distance to shop in their favorite store.

I also understand that the Bowthorpe Sainsbury's is currently undergoing a huge expansion. So they must think that out of town shopping trend is here to stay.

Or perhaps they know where the NDR will finally end-up.

A Tesco was built on the outskirts of Lynn some years ago on the understanding that their shop in the centre of town would remain as a Tesco - it now trades as Wilkinson..

The centre car parking in Lynn was free on Bank Hoildays but now it's the nomal daily charges and Sundays which at the moment free will no longer be after 1st  June

Then of course there is the newish Tesco on the edge of Hunstanton which is supposed to have timed car parking, but that never works as the barriers are useless and that's without the loss of trade in the centre of town as shoppers go straight to Tesco and out again because of the high car park charges.

Just a couple of examples of head in the sand - build a supermarket on the edge pf town and then drive the customers away from the town centre with massive car park charges

The cliff top car park used to be jammed full but since the local council increased their charges there is always plenty of room.

Yep.

Soon they will control our food supply completely. Then there will be no choices except what they give us.

You could always come and dig my allotment. It is just as good as a trip to the gym supermarkets with their blobby slimmer bikes etc and you get real food that tastes into the bargain.

Arnt modern people silly.

Surely, a letter, on offical Council letterheading,  would be signed by a known Councillor - with his/her name typed underneath the signature.   If the letter is not from anyone recognisable and not on proper Council letterheading surely it is null and void.

Tesco would have to produce a valid letter to support their claim.

I certainly wouldn't shop there.  Enough is enough!  Please support your local traders.  A good start is to buy your fruit and veg from a local box scheme, many of which can be delivered to you door.  See www.theecologist.org/banner.asp?banner_id=18 for a list.

I've missed the full story here - the Tesco letter didn't make the international news - but I'm rather puzzled.

If the vast majority of people in Sheringham don't want a Tesco, then if one opens surely nobody will shop there? - I doubt people are going to drive from somewhere else just to shop at the Sheringham Tesco.

Good to see the EDP giving Tescos at Fakenham a free plug with a pointless article about new jobs (probably not for those who'll lose theirs when other stores close) a bit of free publicity.Like they say,"every little helps".

What exactly is everyones problem with Tesco??  As said above, if no one wants to shop there then they won't open stores.  The fact that they are opening more and more stores shows theres more and more demand.

You don't spend millions on building and open a supermarket in the hopes that you might build up a customer base.  You build the store because the demand and the customer base is there already.

It's all well and good people saying we should support our local stores, but in this day and age if I can save £20-£30 on a trolley full of goods then thats what I'm going to do.

Maybe the fact they are openong more and more stores shows there are more people than you think to whom price is the only consideration.

Er, would you save that much by shopping at Tesco?   It would have to be packaged or tinned stuff which you buy - prices of fresh meat, fish, fruit and vergetables are hiked up to make up for the cheaper packaged stuff which has a longer shelf life.     It is far cheaper to buy fresh stuff from small, local shops, where the quality is also superior,  rather than supermarkets.

I haven't the time to shop in supermarkets anyway - especially Tesco who never have enough cashiers and it takes such a long while to find everything in the store!
