Re: Walcott hits back

Just heard back about my official complaint

It has all been refuted and many of my relevant points not even addressed.

I was spoken to, when in fact, I was yelled at and told I would be thrown out in front of several witnesses

I was not invited, when in fact neither were others who had spoken at the previous meeting and were allowed to speak

I would disrupt the meeting, when I was asking questions put to me by villages who couldnt ask the questions themselves

I am thinking of taking it further to the Ombudsman

How can these top officials know the full facts when they are only briefed by their own people who have been shown to be lacking and when their jobs are at stake.

The Chief Constable wrote a letter full of issues which could be challenged but no one gets the chance to tell him as he only hears from his own people who brief him on what they want him to hear and he agrees out of ignorance of the full facts.

When do these officials get to hear the truth about their own people

How much more can the people of Norfolk take. The government has now said that the local councils must pay for any flood damage caused by the sea surge because not enough damage was done. What does it take, drownings and corpses. We would then have Brown and his cronies appearing for a photo shoot stating this must not happen again. What a good job you have a M.P. who cares. Re: Walcott hits back

Well John

If that is the case, the council will take as little responsibility for the damage as it has for not sounding the sirens.

Walcott will be left to its own devices to restore and get back to normal by the efforts of the local inhabitants.

I have heard from the Ombudsman and my case will now be investigated by an independant body.

However, things are progressing and I should be home in a few weeks and then can get on to the case again.

A very good article about the sea surge and the views of the flood wardens who are disgusted with the NNDC has been in  the Town and Country News last week.

Of course, the council representative again said we should all get together to work things out, but when we do go to the meetings, they will not talk about what went wrong, what they have learned or what they will do in the future.

They want to move on but we will not let them sweep their dangerous mistakes under the carpet.

Just reading the article in the E.D.P.re flood defences for Suffolk, who have been told by DEFRA that there is no money available for flood defences.Isn't it time that the councils in Norfolk and Suffolk got together with their M.Ps.Again we have got a fragmented campaign.Just what this government want. Funny how they can find the money for Essex and London.John

Re: Walcott hits back

Today we see that the 100 year plan for protecting the coast line will be changed after much lobbying to include among others the village/hamlet of Scratby. Now this place is a prime example of stupidly placed building stupidly allowed by the council over the last few years. The cliffs at Scratby have been falling into the sea since Nelsons time when the "rottenstone" was used for scouring decks. There are hardly any properties older than 100years, there hardly remains any vestige of a real village there at all and the vast majority of properties are houses built around old holiday chalets, or are old holiday chalets or they are new build.

While campaigners have been moaning about erosion idiots have still been building within a few tens of yards of the cliff edge and expect the rest of us to pick up the bill for protecting them.

What should have happened is a planning restriction should have been placed on the hamlet years ago and landowners compensated as their property was lost. Probably far cheaper than building huge rock reefs. This is one bit of coast where erosion will not put anywhere at risk for a long long time and the money could have been much better spent on protecting low lying areas or communities that were built before there was awareness of coastal erosion . Scratby as it is now just should not qualify for help and everyone who has bought or built a house there in the last 30 years should be told sorry but you should have used your eyes and your common sense

Re: Walcott hits back

Hi and thanks for your very kind thoughts.

I, for one would have been very grateful if the powers that be would have denied planning permission for where my property was built.

However, we all took searches out and none of them showed the problems or the enviromental prophesies now granted as the norm.

This only six years ago.

I have just received correspondance from Norman Lamb with copies of his letters to the Regional Director of the Environment Agency and the Chief Constable. I was very grateful that he hadnt just listened and then done nothing else about things or communicating his findings to the people who were most affected and not those who sit in offices miles away from the problems.

Their replies were as predicted briefed of course by the people who were found wanting "Silver Control" and of course a neck saving reply for the people in charge.

There is another article being prepared for the media by a local journalist, who I know reads this Forum, who has been in touch and we are not going to let things die down.

I am still waiting to be contacted personally by the local Ombudsman and am swotting up on the Councillors Code of Conduct to make the NNDC representatives accountable.

Regards to all, by heck I miss my computer.

Re: Walcott hits back
Jill.I have a satement issued by Mr.Phil Woolas, the Environment Minister which he passed on to my M.P. Quote" Our flood warning system is based on the forecast of the high tide.On the 6th/8th November 2007 the tide height at Walcott was not especially high-it was at a level that has been exceeded numerous times in the past few years without any resultant flooding. The difference on this occasion was the size and height of the waves which were the cause of the flooding. The waves were sufficient to overwhelm the local drainage system and the sewage pumps owned by Anglia Water which resulted in flooding occurring outside the flood plain. One of the advantages of our flood warning system is that recipients can choose what level of flood warning they receive. The lowest level of flood warnings are issued at numerous times throughout the year and many people opt not to receive this level of warning. This would explain why those who signed up to the service did not receive the flood watch on the 6th.November.We hope to improve our service in the light of this event and we suggest that those who signed up to the system register for flood watches as well as flood warnings. We are now investigating the possibility of attempting to forecast wave height for Walcott. The siren does not form part of our flood warning arrangements and it is a matter for the police to assist in the evacuation of the public. We DO NOT ADVICE whether or not the siren is sounded".   Over to you Jill.     John

Re: Walcott hits back

Hi again

Well, there was a very good article in the Town and Country newspaper which "ahem" featured some of my comments but of course not all as some would be unprintable.

thank you john and Keith for your continued interest.

The people in Silver Control must be praying that time has diminished our anger and that it is swept under the carpet.

Some hopes.............we have only just started.

The article mentioned Steve Hems who was in Silver Control that night and said they stood down as the high tides had predicted that they were not as high as previous times when flooding had not occurred. They also judged that another team was not neccessary to monitor conditions so did not call up any backing.

The thing is, if the Environment Agency predictions do not take into consideration the waves or wind changes and Silver Control bases all their decisions on this, we the poor residents in the vulnerable areas are on a hiding to nothing.

Added to this, political capital made by not sounding the sirens although it backfired on this occasion, would have been made by saying they were not needed and were obsolete. this would back the previous claim by North Norfolk District Council that they should be scrapped, mainly because no one wants to pay for them.

Added to this the neck saving excuses, by the people responsible for not sounding the sirens the whole debacle is disastrous, literally.

Who would want these people looking out for their safety and that of their families.  they should be sacked and a professional team trained, monitored and procedures written and adhered to.

Norfolk has had it share of the elements lately, flood, earthquake, explosion and fire at Bacton, is someone trying to tell us something?

Re: Walcott hits back

Jill,

Well done for keeping the pressure on those who failed you and your neighbours in a time of crisis.  It is another one of those situations where all the so-called disaster plans were inadequate, lack of communication and information exchanged between the various bodies responsible for our safety and the resultant white-wash by all concerned to pass the buck for any blame.

Remember that all Local Councils are based around the committee method of management.  No one person, even at the top, seems to take the blame for inadequate services.  The general malaise seen in all forms of local goverment from grass root parish councils to large local authorities is evident to us all - a combination of decisions being made on the ego / self interest of the councillors with the apathy and laziness of a large proportion of the council staff.  How do you think our Council Tax can be frittered away on such disasterous projects, stupid decisions and wasteful ideas.

Keep up the good work.

Glass

p.s. Hope your home is back to normal after all of the repairs.

Re: Walcott hits back

Jill, what are the implications of Monday's forecast for Walcot? At the moment they are talking West Coast problems but looks like a spring tide and a lot of wind.If wave height was your problem before will there be a problem even without a surge?

Re: Walcott hits back

Let us hope that there is no flooding and we are lucky.

It would be useful to have an accurate record of the sea conditions for future reference however.

I do hope the jobs worthies and the RSPB are sweating though, the risk can be attributed firmly to their stupidity.
