Arnhem 60 years on

As a young lad my recollection was of the skies, looking towards the east coast area, were black with aircraft as far as the eye could see. The remarks were in the nature of "Jerry's going to catch a big one". Little did we know of the drama that was to unfold on that day the 17th September 1944.

Visiting the military cemetery at Arnhem still provokes a gut wrench when you see the ages of some of those who died. Thanks to the locals, including many schoolchildren, the cemetery is kept in marvellous condition. If you're in the vicinity the museum is well worth a visit.
The EXPERT knows more and more about less and less until he knows everything about nothing .

My 2 sons(age 13 and 11) visited Arnhem last year for the 60th Anniversary with their Nannies,who organise a coach of Veterans for the trip every year.They thoroughly enjoyed their experience,visiting the Cemetery and The Bridge and watching the Veterans perform a jump from the planes.They socialised with many of the Veterans and were completely overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Dutch people,especially their hosts who they stayed the week with.Once again this year they have chosen to go back to Arnhem in September rather than have a "sun" holiday.
A really good site to go on is http://www.airborne-herdenkingen.nl/ which has some great photos of the different events that take place.There is even a photo of my son laying a wreath in memory of the polish people which has made me very proud.
