Prejudiced agencies?

I was reading the article on this website regarding the Portuguese community in Thetford.

Firstly, may I say that I am glad efforts are being made to repair the damage to Anglo-Portuguese relations there following the problems after the Euro 2004 match.

There was a comment in the article regarding employment agencies being prejudiced. I am wondering who they are not prejudiced against.

I am British but various agencies just are not interested in giving work to the experienced worker.

I have tried "temping" in office work both times when I was made redundant from insurance companies. The first time I was in my 40s, the second time in my 50s. I did find the first time the work was rather erratic but it was really bad when I was in my 50s. I took my CV into one agency and they said that the consultant would contact me "in a few days" to register me. A week later I rang them to ask how my application for work was going and I was told they had "lost" my CV! I then took in a second copy when they tested and registered me immediately! The work I was given was poor and the best job they gave me was when a young girl walked out of a secretarial job because she "was expected to do the filing!". I have given up "temping" as I found I was not getting enough work from any agency. In fact I was spending more time waiting for the phone to ring then actually working! I was so stressed over it I e-mailed the agency I was dealing with at the time to put things on hold! I notice they haven't contacted me to check if I am available again - they were just not interested in giving me work!

I even applied by e-mail for an advertised vacancy working in an agency office. They e-mailed me by return to say they will "contact me if they have a suitable vacancy"! They did not say they refused to consider my application nor did they say they were considering it!

I would be very pleased to find out who agencies are not interested in giving work to. It would save an awfully great deal of time and effort on the part of those who register with agencies then have to hang around waiting for the type of work they are highly experienced in - more so than the people who actually receive the jobs!
