I was made aware a few days ago that whilst Defra is prepared to fund some high visibilty EA flood defence projects ( eg  the money being spent  building up banks at Thurne and the new  pumping station/sluice works at Wiggenhall )it is keeping the EA very short of funding for vital maintenance. So much so that one internal drainage board chairman wrote that Fenland water courses are in the worst state he has known for 50 years and jeopardise the integrity of  Fenland drainage. The EA is also empire building by attempting to take over internal drainage boards which have done their jobs well for the last 200 years in some cases.(Heaven help us if they do because it will be just "paper learning" instead of experience and common sense in control.) Meanwhile artificial channels and other waterways that stop the area from flooding are not dredged ( unless they are used for tourism) and wildlife conservation, EA worker health and safety and expense is given as an excuse. Yet building in the Midlands has continued apace and surface water rushes down to Fenland at increasing rates leaving the  best food producing area in the country endangered by neglect.  The same applies to the reclaimed land at Horsey/Hickling etc. Defra ( ie the government) keeps the EA short of funds and uses climate change and potential sea level rises as an excuse for proposing to abandon sea walls. As that stretch of coastal defence has always been vulnerable  and has always been repaired I can't see why it should it be any different now. Ah I  forgot, Labour city slicker government starving the countryside of funds and inefficient EA management wastes the funds they do get. Meanwhile another Defra department is wasting money worrying about the few gaps that exist in the coastal footpath network. How nice, all the Chelsea tractor driving fans of Gordon will be able to read about the complete coastal path network and bray their way a few miles from the nearest car park whilst residents of Horsey and Winterton etc look for somewhere else to live. Nothing will change unless we have a government that gives a hoot about what happens in rural areas. Norman Lamb will do his best  for his constituents but why isn't Labour MP Tony Wright speaking up on behalf of Winterton?    Report

Hi I have just found this information on the CCAG website if any of this effects you in anyway.   For anyone interested The meeting locations and times are as follows: Tuesday 8th April Hickling Community Hall at 7:30pm Wednesday 9th April Potter Heigham Village Hall new venue: St. Mary's Church at 7:30pm Tuesday 15th April Sea Palling Village Hall at 7:30pm Norman Lamb MP will attend each of the meetings. CCAG's Malcolm Kerby has called these meetings to give the people a voice that their views may be carried to the very heart of Government. These Natural England proposals (without consultation ) are yet another clear example of how little regard Central Government and it's Quangos have for people and their built environment in the matter of Coastal Management and Governance. I do hope some of you manage to attend,    Report

I assume you are jesting but for those who do not know he is MP for the Great Yarmouth parliamentry constituency which I am pretty much sure includes Winterton and Somerton up to the Hundred Stream. I do hope some of you manage to attend, manged to get myself a lift. The change of venue to St. mary's church was in Potter Heigham, not at Hickling was it? Tommorrow's meeting is called for by and organised by people for people and interested parties, not a place for politicians to girate for votes, I shall keep that very much in mind. We need support communities and in the past the dregding by the Crown Management, so clearly an exacerbating factor to coastal erosion, was discussed, but not one MP dared to make a stand against the dredging of marine reseveres and the damage to fisheries and breeding grounds this causes. I have just checked on the site and it has been crossed out and changed. Bloomin great I have just spent all morning delivering slips of paper to every house in the village. Making sure that people were informed, ( they didn't  know) As I cut and pasted the info from the site, they all give the wrong information. Hopefully people will see the cars. I've just been onto the Govt petition website.  There are fewer than 700 people signed up to the petition I signed. I can't believe the level of support isn't higher. This piece of ludicrous political chicanery should be shot down in flames. It doesn't just affect locals. It affects everybody who cares about Norfolk. Where is everybody?    Report
