Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

If they are preventing any moves to protect the Broads from flooding because of any decisions they make on the running of the Broads, then they most certainly ARE responsible for flood defense or the lack of it.

They should be made responsible in law.

The decisions of this unelected quango can result in a large loss of life and property damage in the Broads area.

There can be no room for doubt about this.

The lives of the local people are in their hands!!!

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
In one short answer Keith, the Broads Authority should be disbanded forthwith. They have failed in their duty to protect the people of Broadland, failed in their duty to protect the businesses, failed to protect the tourism industry, failed to protect the navigational waters and most important failed to protect local inhabitants and property. They have however gained one tick and that is to hand the Broads over to the R.S.P.B. etc.without so much as a whimper.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

I do wish you John and Keith would stop being so hysterical about this. Neither of you live in an affected area. The BA are total turkeys agreed  but this is not their doing and has absolutely nothing to do with the RSPB. The same sort of steps are being proposed for other parts of the country and it is about money. The people who should be weighing in here are the district and county councils on behalf of those who are affected. The idea floated is quite clear ( if totally unacceptable) By sacrificing Horsey Hickling and Martham Broads and the land reclaimed since the 1700s it is hoped to save money. Banks built further back at narrow points between areas of higher land  at Potter and Stalham would protect the rest of the Broads and be much easier to maintain as they would not be subject to the force of the waves. What would be left would be a brackish lagoon/freshwater marsh much as it was before the sandbank built up across the inlet in the Dark Ages. The sea has broken the banks numerous times since then and there is not much to suggest that it would become open sea unless there is a huge rise in  sea levels.

The only way lives will be endangered is if people are not properly compensated and relocated before the defences are abandoned. The folly of new building at Sea Palling becomes clearer and if this proposal becomes reality there is a lot of misery ahead. But at least one lot will be happy-if the water is brackish it will kill off all the rare weeds in Hickling and Horsey so there will be no reason for the BA not to dredge it so the boaters will be able to sail to their hearts content.

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

It does not matter at all whether we live in the effected area gardener.

We are British and have every right to comment.

No Norfolk isolationist stance will sway me.

Of course the BA has a responsibility on flood protection, it matters not one jot if this is from nature or from a government body.

All this released media reporting on controlled flooding is simply to muddy the waters and cover the incompetence of the BA.

The Ministers responsible for the undemocratic formation of the BA are hardly going to criticize their baby run by their OBN are they.

Norman Lamb is the best bet officially it is true.

I just hope he is not got at.

I take it Gardener has read the R.S.P.B. report and what its ideal intentions are.A, R.S.P.B. reserve with no navigation rights.A englishmens home is is castle and he should be proud to fight for his rights to live in it.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
Do you really think that a couple of walls and a few sand banks will hold back the sea water Gardener.Had you have read a forecast in the 80s for the Norfolk area, it said that if the coastal defences were not maintained, then Peterborough would become a seaside town. You only have to live near a flood plain and see what happens during severe flooding. As for being hysterical,I will not be around when all of this takes place, but my children will and perhaps your grand children will.I hope they can say thank you ,and not thanks to those selfish old b........... we have nothing.John

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
Its been reiterated here that the BA has no responsibility for flood protection, but when the announcement to abandone houses, villages and porperty in North Norfolk, sacrificing Eccles and Winterton to the North sea, it was a spokesman from the BA that commented on the news, not the Environment agency.

The BA should be dismissed and a new agenda set, with elections to a newly found body being a solid part of a basic new structure. We cannot rely on this Government, or the local, self obsessed and self appointed to safeguard the properties and houses.

A Flood protection lottery, non profit making, is an option for us, should we so decide, we need more funding for the Broads, dredging and coastal protection. I would favor a massive dyke raising programme along the existing coast, without the sacrifice, new dykes were there are none, sluicegates were necessarry and dyke wardens, a means of our own flood protection, just in case there are breaches.
We also need to talk about the next 150 years of sea level rise and prepare for it, if it takes a lock system protecting the river system of the Broad, so be it. The abstarction of sand off the Norfolk coast has to stop, it is an abomination to the ecosystem underwater not to talk about the effects it has on the currents. nevermind

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

Have you read the EDP comments from the climate change minister, nevermind?

Spoon fed comments from the Defra people who are interested parties having a place on the board of the dredging companies

Conflict of interests, I should say.

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.

Climate change Minister is a good title for him.

Changes every time the economic climate shows his corrupt government up for what it is.

Why on earth cant the local media uncover all this corruption and tell the local people what they are entitled to know?

Who is making money from gravel extraction and what are their other responsibilities for a start.

Oh thats right Jill, it was the funny blouse that did it.

Mind you most twitchers look the same so not much of a mistake.

You have to check for a cross bar on the £10,000 push bike to be sure.

Re: R.S.P.B.Broads report.
A few years ago I wrote to English Nature and enquired how many SSSIs were actually in force around the Broads and neighbouring land. They replied with very detailed maps and explanations. There was at that time 31 areas ofSSSIs including 1 for North Denes in Great Yarmouth.Considering all of these sites covered the villages now due for demolition by sea water why are English Nature not up in arms instead of being in favour of the proposals.I wonder if they have opposed any development at North Denes. Is this another toothless organisation or just bow to their masters.John

Interesting that all these SSI's are very near sea level isn't it.

I have never considered English Nature as anything other than a tool of government.
