Chapelfield Shopping Centre: Dissertation Online Questionnaire

For my dissertation research i am compiling public questionnaires in Norwich and now online to gauge the consumer's opinion on the Chapelfield Shopping Centre. I don't necessarily believe the negative views on Chapelfield, i am entering this with an open mind to investigate whether the shopping centre has been justified. I’m a Geography undergraduate studying at Reading University and this summer I am conducting research for my dissertation entitled "Has Norwich City Council’s Decision to Develop the Chapelfield Shopping Centre Been Justified?"

Please take a few minutes to complete my online questionnaire at www.norwichproject.co.uk, only over 18s can fill this in for ethical reasons. Only complete this if you have been to Norwich before to shop and have visited the Chapelfield Shopping Centre at least once.

Thank you so much,

Edd Smith

This is certainly an interesting way for the Council to do market research on one of their failures without being mentioned.

Hi, hope you're joking there, no i am really a geography degree student, hopefully people will feel free to fill in my online questionnaire as this will give me plenty to analyse over the coming months. In the near future i'm hoping to put a different questionnaire up for retail businesses to fill in.

Thanks to all those who have completed my questionnaire.

Edd Smith

Clicking on Edd's link would have established his credentials Keith. It's incredibly rude to label posters as liars or involved in subterfuge on zero evidence.

I made no attack on Ed or his credentials.

I simply said it was an easy way for the council to do market research on one of its failures.

No, what you made was another of you're petty, bitter insinuations

"This is certainly an interesting way for the Council to do market research on one of their failures without being mentioned. "

Edd has nothing to do with the Council, as you would have found out had you actually read any of the posts correctly ..... But then you never do that do you Keith?

How are you going to fit "When do we get our country back" into this thread?

How about.

When do we get our City and its resources back?

Time to reverse the big sell out to the greed industries you support ly?

I did read Edd's post and links and I wish him well with his education.

Hows yours going localyokel?

Re: Chapelfield Shopping Centre: Dissertation Research in Norwich

Regarding the EDP item about, Dissertation Research in Norwich.

The part that said... <He said that so far his research had shown there was a definite “generation gap” in the way people viewed Chapelfield. “I'm finding the very young are up for it because it's bringing designer clothes to Norwich, while the very old are not interested in it.” Mr Smith is keen for more people to contact him with their views on whether the centre has been a success and whether it has affected other shopping areas in the city.>

The point is that 60% or more of shop sales is geared to the under 30s. As you get older at 40, you start to be more selective and less wasteful. The 50s and over start to buy more quality products that last longer and better value for money. and don`t require buying so much.

So as much more is spent by the under 30s, and more shops are around to cater for them, making more money from that age group. It is no wonder Chapelfield appears to favour the younger customer........

Re: Chapelfield Shopping Centre: Dissertation Research in Norwich

I have not seen anything new in Capelfield at all. Just cack.

As for designer clothes I can tell you that most are made by a company in the midlands that doesn't advertise.

They are mostly of the same second rate cut and just have different names and labels on them.

The new Autumn catalogue is out with the usual boring colourless fashions for the chavs who will buy anything if its in the Sun.

No Chapelfield should be a car park to feed the proper shops.

Not a money mine for the OBN.

Good question Ed.

It stands for Old Boys Network and is a generalisation I use to describe the hidden way in which Norfolk is controlled and prevented from entering the 21st century.

They wont let you explore into it far, so I expect you wont bother.

Confused [8-)] Re: Chapelfield Shopping Centre: Dissertation Research in Norwich

Ed

Don't be taken in by the degree of negativity around these posts. Norfolk people are adverse to change as can be seen by a number of posters here refusing point blank to visit either Mall or only visit the book shop & pizza joint. You would get a similatr negative response if you asked about the Forum, the hospital or back in Anglo Saxon times probably the cathedral!!

The key point that has been missed here is that before the Malls were built Norwich had a massive under supply of retail space that was driving up rent & rates. This was developing a retail monoculture where the only retailers that could afford to compete were multiples and mobile phone shops.

There is now marginal over supply in the area that is supporting greater diversity as well local stores raising their game in order to compete. Jarrolds was a tired provincial retailer with a captive market but now sees itself competing directly with House of Fraser. The Lanes were an unconnected cllection of shops that are now striving to create the independent centre that so many posters claim interest in.

Demand is rising to meet rising supply as can be seen in the building boom creating new residential inner city areas. Incomers, younger consumers and visitors drawn to Norwich's new hotels and aim to be a destination are the target audience for Chapelfield. The impact has been relatively benign on the rest of Norwich retail where the more conservative can still shop.

Though you could try Adrian Ramsey, the Green City Councillor for an alternative view!

Cheers ;-)
