Golden Oldies too Old for wartime songs-edp item

I had to read this article a couple of times because I could not believe my eyes. I realise that the home at Shipdham cares for those with dementia but what in heavens name possessed anyone at Gressenhall to think it appropriate to class 55 year olds as elderly and in need of a sing along? The fact that someone had to work out what the people they were catering for were actually interested in is a sad indictment of the lack of intelligence amongst those who care for the elderly and what those who have to live in care homes have to endure. No one would expect an 18 year old and a 48 year old to share the same history or interests. As for the stereotype of the elderly sitting in chairs watching TV-well, my father is nearing 80 and a couple of months ago he was out with a chain saw clearing timber from the stand he grows for his wood burner. This weekend he could equally well be out with his metal detector, gardening, or clocking up a few miles of in line roller speed skating with his mates and his great grandsons. In their late 60s and 70s my parents completely rebuilt their house and did much of the work themselves. Not exactly sing song material.
In the public eye several famous actors of pensionable age will be attending the premier of the new Indiana Jones movie!
I found the tone of the article patronising and typical of the ageist twaddle that is perpetrated by thirty somethings who do not see that under the grey hair may be someone who drove a landing craft on D Day, fought in Malaya, helped keep peace in Cyprus or was in the vanguard of computer science in the UK or one of the pioneers in the North Sea oil and gas industry or who may have been political activist or even a rock musician.
I hope those of you who agree will remind the EDP that grey does not mean ga ga. Golden Oldies indeed.

In my experience gardener, it is the younger generations who have done nothing and have nothing to offer.
I much prefer talking to people well over 65, they always seem to have fantastic memories to talk about.
The EDP should talk to more old people and leave the boring young to their keyboards, watery lager and motor mouth talk.
Of course there is a sad side and that is the way modern young people are throwing away all the lessons of the past.
They have almost completely destroyed the country up to now.
As to music, I like all sorts but the older music said much much more than most of the modern stuff.
Mainly because it was written when people were actually doing something instead of just sponging off the state.

Actually, those of us in our 50s are still quite young!
It is a mistake to be ageist about anyone. In our church we have people in their 70s and 80s who are always dashing about doing things. One man in his 70s is in several choirs (including ours - he is a good singer!) and is a major force in organising fund raising for the renovation of our church hall - apart from other things he does.
I also know younger people in their 20s who have a surprising amount of knowledge about the world for their young years and exhibit the the good examples of "old head on young shoulders"!
On the other side I have, in the past, known people who appear quite elderly in their late 40s whilst others have been really immature in their early 40s!
I judge individual people by what they are like themselves - not what their birth certificates may say.

Maybe the British young have not much to say because they're too busy fighting and dying in the Middle East, slaving in McJobs to buy an overpriced shoebox in a pyramid selling scam, paying off their student loans after gaining useless degrees, being fleeced by Govt (10% tax abolition) to subsidise care for the elderly while those same elderly cling to their huge houses. Maybe Britain's youth are not bothered about being denied the final salary pension schemes the older generation took for granted. Maybe they're just resigned to the fact their sole purpose in life is to enslave themselves to keep the baby-boomer, take all and give nothing generation, happy and content.
From cradle to grave? Oh yes, but not for today's youth.

Can you see them all dressed up in their Boy George and Glitter Band, Slade and ShowWaddyWaddy outfits showing the younger generation how to really rock.

People who were listening to that music back then are in the main, tired, overweight, middle aged and looking for a quiet life. Using your theory, I would expect to see teddy boys in my local retirement home today singing Elvis songs and thrusting their repacement hips etc. Does this go on, then?

So you think they deserve more?
What exactly have they done to improve things?
It is after all up to them to do something about it if they are not satisfied.

It's just lazy stereotyping. All age groups suffer this, not just the over 55s. In newspaper land, my 16 year old son is a dangerous, work-shy hoodie pumped full of drug fuelled hate, about to rob a pensioner while swigging on a bottle of cider plugged into his ipod, listening to rap music. When in fact, he's a polite, well dressed young man with a passion for history and playing jazz funk on his bass guitar.

Since the beginning of time older generations have moaned about the shortcomings of the next generations. No one deserves anything they don't work for. Today's young are guilty of apathy. They should protest more. They should organise. The sit on their hands.
The boomer generation have always been demanding, protesting, striking, rioting to get what they want right through to this day. I take my hat off to them though. I wish the young would show some of that spirit. They are being royally screwed.

Can anyone beat my current record for the youngest person described as elderly? From a newspaper report of a week or so back "elderly man of fifty six robbed at knifepoint".Anyway whats all this obsession with age?. Carole Meadows 32 and her brother Ian 37 told the police officer 42 that the boy 16 etc etc.

As someone who works in a council run care home for the elderly two nights a week i can assure you that you are quite wrong. The standard of care , the food , the attention to personal preferences and detail , the freedom the residents are given to do just what they want , the medical care, the entertainment provided, and the positive attitude far exceed anything you will find in the NHS( for whom i spent 30 yeas working ). Most of the residents love it and so do their relatives.

Easily! ...Well, sort of. There are a number of retiree associations which have a minimum age rather lower than that. Retiree Associations are aimed at 'older' people, but nobody around here would dare call them 'elderly'.
The minimum age for membership of the AARP is 50 and membership comes with lots of 'Senior Citizen' benefits and discounts, including the AARP Passport (http://tinyurl.com/6fqcgt ) which, amongst other things, will get you a discount on hang gliding. - You can also save quite a bit on motorcycle insurance![Wink [;)]](/cs/emoticons/emotion-5.gif)
The UK is somewhat retarded in its outlook towards those who are retired. In other countries, retired people are viewed as people who (usually) don't go to work every day, but who do other things instead. Retired people provide a lot of jobs - not only in healthcare and geriatric care, but also in sport and leisure industries.
In the UK all too often 'retired' seems to mean 'of no further use' and the UK's attitude towards its older population is reprehensible.
