The Huckerby Debate

Oldtimer 19/02/2008, 10:23 AM
I think that there is a lot of mileage left in Darren Huckerby yet and although he does have the odd off-day (Don't we all?) we still have nobody else who can cause such panic in the opposition down that left side. I think it is wrong and unfair to play him anywhere but on the left. He does not stand out in the middle or on the right. While it is difficult to criticize any of Roeder's decisions in view of the miracle transformation he has brought about in City since his arrival I think that it was unwise of him to not even take Huckerby as a substitute to Leicester. When Darren does eventually leave the club I hope he gets the sort of hero's goodbye such as that given to Ewan Roberts. He deserves nothing less!

As his manager, shouldn't Glen Roeder have called Hux into his office and asked Hux what truth if any, is in his agents comments???

And offer Hux a new contract, We DO need him to stay!!!!

He needs to talk to Hux!!!!

And PDQ !!!

Good as Huckerby maybe thought of by some, Norwich have still acheived nothing with him, Norwich have yet to achieve anything with Roeder. He has only got better players in on loan because the rubbish players that were there got the club in such a mess.......

What do you want from the club........ to get in the prem.......well it aint gonna happen without millions injected into far better players ...... money buys success in football ... thats what it has become all about now.

95% of teams in the league acheive nothing every year...... 1% take all the cream and glory.... and the punters pay for it all throught the turnstile and sky channels......... and most teams are struggling with debt that never gets paid......funny old game football

I think there are many fans still hoping Huckerby will by some miracle stay with us .We are not saying this because we don`t trust what Roeder is doing but that we hope there is a place for Darren Huckerby in the long term plans.Come on City do your Best by HUCKS as he has done by us all.

I agree 100%. If Huckerby was a half decent player that would still apply. But I believe he is in fact better than half decent and still one of the most skillful  in the squad. Look how we treated Iwan on getting into the Premiership. There may be no room for sentimentality but what about loyalty? What player will want to come to our club if they see how we discard players nearing the end of their careers who have served this club well. Yes, he may be paid a lot but if so, that was the deal we offered at the time and were over the moon when he accepted.

Roeder has done wonders with his loan players (hooray!) but I don't want to watch an endless stream of loanees - I want to watch Norwich players. His real management skills will be tested next year. His culling of certain players (whose main crime was not playing well when being played out of position - Simon Lappin in particular) - may yet prove expensive. Discarding Huckerby with just months of the season remaining will prove likewise., if only in the final tally of points attained.

Huckerby's been our hero for so long, he lead us to the Premiership, he's taken  a drop in wages to play for us, he's turned down offers to play for bigger clubs, he's broken ranks to speak out against the sale of players and more importantly he's one of us- a true fan.

Even now, with no hint of a new contract , he's come out and pledged his loyalty and commitment to our club, how many players do that.

He may not be the player he was 5 years ago when he arrived but he can still worry opponents, he can still excite the crowds and he's still good enough to be in the squad of 16 week after week.

Now if you don't rate or like him Mr Roeder then fair enough but lets not ruin the memories we have of our legent and lets let him leave on a high with his head up high.

He's done so much for this club surely we can treat him with the respect he deserves.

Comment from David Batley (season ticket holder and shareholder):

For four years Huckerby has delighted fans and terrorised defences. His commitment to Norwich City has been total and he has said many times that he wants to finish his career here and settle in Norfolk. How can any sensible, true supporter now turn against him ? Is there any fan who could truthfully say that the performances of Kieran Gibbs against Hull and James Henry against Leicester were better than we could have expected from a fit Huckerby? If the player was fit then it was a great mistake not to play him in those games and could have cost us a chance to reach the play-offs. Glen Roeder has done a great job and we owe him a massive thank-you but he is not superhuman. He made mistakes at Watford, West Ham and Newcastle, which is why he faced dismisal. If he is costing us points because of a spat with Huckerby he is making another mistake

All the good teams I have seen have width. Without it attacks become predictable and easy for opposing defences to deal with - which is why we score few goals. Our midfielders, back four and even goalkeeper, are limited as to where they can place the long pass or clearance. During the excellent run the team has relied on determination, tenacity and a run of good fortune, which saw world class saves and missed penalties. Like many supporters I believe that Croft and Huckerby attacking the flanks and opening up defences, allowing our strikers more space, would take the team on from the excellent place where Roeder has taken us. The manager does have a problem. Loan players came here expecting to play and their managers allowed them to come for experience. Leaving them out could jeapordise future loans. However, you can use loan players to get you out of a jam, as Roeder did, but not to build a regular, consistent team to push for promotion. If Roeder wants to build a more permanent, regular team, a fit Huckerby is a massive asset. The player looks after himself. He loves Norwich City but he needs to feel wanted. The manager should show some real strength of character, sit down with the player, clear the air and negioate a further year's contract. That should please everybody.

Well said. It is upsetting to say the least to think that some Norwich fans (and management) seem happy to dump someone who has given so much and who they were once cheering from the stands. I don't want my club to treat good men like that. At least Huckerby cannot be blamed for the Leicester result, (like certain players were blamed for the Plymouth defeat with no chance to prove themselves in their true positions). If he's fit he must start against Barnsley. Even on an off day he can do more than some of our midfielders, apparently lauded more for work rate than real ability.

One must look at Norwich over the past 5 years and the next future 5 years....... They get to the prem and get kicked out again then .... play diabolicial football for 2 years and scratch around at the bottom of their leaque. Now they have moved up again.........

Norwich are known as the YOYO TEAM..... up and down they go but acheive little in the proccess.

Now go back several years and they were in league one fighting all the top clubs and beating Arsenal..

Huckerby or not they are no longer a team like they were in the past.............. the trouble is fans think that one good player solves all their problems...... the top teams have 11 good players.....

A reality check is needed for some Norwich fans...... maybe paying far more for season tickets will get better players and acheive prem and euro cup involvement in a few years time....... put more money into the club and you increase the chance of winning something worth while and silverware in the cupboard.

Or just go up and down for ever more...? ......... going nowhere.......

Hi from 4everfan, I was hoping that NCFC would do their best by Darren Huckerby when i wrote before, but to hear that Glenn Roeder has treated him by the book, i`m not sure which book. You have to hand it to him (Mr Roeder) its a good? move the dust will surely have settled a little by next season but what a way to let a brilliant person go, football player or not does anyone deserve to be treated in that way? Perhaps we are to sentimental but surely a round of applause is not to much to ask ?Troube is fans and player now feel cheated .Did we want to replace player with a "real pleasant surprise"I think not, we would have liked to have given player another chance to exite us for one more season.i would just like to wish Darren all the very best for his future, whatever he decides to do he will not be easily forgotten, yours very sincerely 4everfan

Huckerby has done his job, and with the introduction of Roeder they have moved from the bottom of their leaque to near the top....well done roeder.......

But Dear Oh Dear..... they go all the way back down to near the relegation zone agin...... With Huckerby or Roeder or anybody else....... Norwich are not a team to be admired as consistant ability has been their own downfall.

Stupidliy the fans still give up their hard earned cash to watch at times diabolical rubbish from the Norwich team this season and the past 2 seasons.

Huckerby maybe better the most players at norwich, but in saying so it doesn`t say much for the ability of the rest of the squad based on the results acheived........

If just avoiding the drop zone is the best norwich fans can expect...... then fans seriously need to get a grip of themselfs,  as to why they are funding norwich players salaries at their expense.....for no achievement...Ripping the fans off, seems to be the order of the day.......

You end up with stupid fans, paying to watch stupid players, acheive stupid results..... valued entertainment ...I think not..........

Huckerby or no Huckerby....?

Football really is a means of letting of steam for those that are interested in the game.........it doesn`t really matters who wins what, as they do it all again the following year and the next..... pointless to some, but gives an interest to the followers and something for them to do at the weekends.

Some make gods out of some players, and even cry when their team looses, some will even fight supporters of opposition teams, and some even give their hard earn cash to make many players incredibley rich ....all to kick a bag of wind around ..... and achieve very little ......funny old game football.
