THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST

Hi to Everyone,

I stayed up late last night to watch on channel 4 at 12:45, London's paranormal "An Interview with a Poltergeist".

I read this book yrs ago and still to this day - do not know what to make of it.  The 1 hr programme interviewed all those involved in the case, neighbours, police, news reporters & The Society of Psychical Research.  They were not fortunate enough to capture many pictures of objects flying around certain rooms, they showed pictures of 'Jane' levitating twice from her bed, we heard taps coming from walls responding to questions posed and in general, saw many baffled adults.  The majority who spent time with the family felt that the phenomena was genuine.  They all agreed that from time to time the two girls would play the odd prank and they would own up to it - but when they were interviewed and the girl Jane began to speak in a mans gruff voice - I did not know what to think.  They named the poltergeist Bill.  He??? was recorded saying "I went blind, I then haemorraged, I went to sleep and died in a chair in the corner of the room."  This information was verified by the son who agreed that his father named Bill, lived at the house before this family moved in and he did die in the chair in the corner of the room.

We all know that during investigations electrical and battery operated equipment can malfunction.  This could be a reason as to why one news reporter took pictures of small toy objects flying around the room was amazed when the pictures did not show this happening during filming.

The voice of 'Bill' that came from the girl Jane - could have been produced as the program indicated by the false vocal chords.  but, and I have to agree, it would not have been sustainable for any length of time before she would get a sore throat and this would be noticeable to all...she never did!

The mother was very brave and remained living in the home & died there herself.   The two girls who are now mature adults were interviewed, they still believe in what happened and never sold their story.

Any comments from those who viewed the programme or read the book would be welcome.

Could it really have happened?

Thanks

Sans

Re: THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST

If there is anyone who did not see the show. Go to Channel 4's '4oD' channel. Its on there free for the next 30 days

http://www.channel4.com/4od/index.html

Put in the 4oD search engine. 'Interview with a poltergeist.'

It might be a good idea to play the video before reading on..........There will be spoilers in my write up

You will have to sign up for 4oD but its well worth it.

Hi Sans

I too watched the programme. After a wonderful tip off about the programme by Email. Thanks Linda.

It was an exellent programme & I enjoyed it greatly.

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty.

I feel that there was a lot of things that happened that seemed to be put on. Not Paranormal

The girls playing tricks was a big one

I think that the news paper reporters were defenatly putting it on. They took photos of Leggo bricks & marbles flying about the room. When the photos were developed there was only the room showing in the pictures. No Leggo bricks or Marbles. These most certanly would have showed up on camera. They are of this world (solid) & not spiritual. So I feel that there was jiggery pokery from the news paper reporters

I feel that if I was a paranormal researcher of the time, I would have most certanly have tried to capture the events on Super8 film. Super 8 film cameras were about at the time. So I feel that this was a huge mistake by the investigators.

What they did get on tape, photos was impressive. However, if it had been captured on Super 8 film, it would have been so much more impressive. Not to mention giving the sceptics a headache

The experiment of making the girl hold a mouth full of water in her mouth & then taping over her mouth shut, was interesting. As the gruff voice was as clear, as it was as the girl was talking normaly. When the researcher removed the tape, the girl spat out the water that she was still holding in her mouth.

No top stage ventriloquist alive today could do that. So that was very, very impressive. As well as a good scientific experiment to try.

It was good to see the paranormal researchers & the sceptics in battle together. I feel that both sides can claim victories.

Yes I feel that there was things happening in the house but not as much as was reported, that could be put down to the paranormal.

One thing that I did find intersting was the the news papers tried to get the girls to add paranormal events to their original stories (no doubt for money) but the girls would not add anything else to their stories.

another thing that I noticed was that the young girl that was athletic as a youngster looked very withdrawn in her adult life.

This could have been down to the drugs that was aministered to her in hospital, or her own paranormal experiences. Possibly both.

Very very interesting programme

Best wishes

Eddie

Re: THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST
hi sans...foolish person that i am...when iheard this was on TV..i posted the info and stupidly put "Interview with a Poltergeist" was on...i cant believe how silly i felt afterwards!!!  Yes it was supposed to be "interview with a POLTERGEIST"!!! LOL!  I was always interested in this...the woman who as a girl, had the experiences seemed quite strange to me!  very "way out"...drugged i dont know?  but the programme was ok, i didnt think it told us all it could have.  Id liked to have seen what happened in subsequent years...if anyone else ever experienced anything spooky there.   That voice[at the time] and even now, sounds so much like that Morris to me.  And that young girl seemed to have quite a mischeivous face and manner...years ago when i saw this on TV, i ws gobsmacked!  but now so many years later, althought there were some parts that seemed genuine, it also seemed very staged to me.   My opinion is that maybe things did happen, but when they started to get publicity, other stuff was helped along,  in the vein of a hoax.  But thats only my opinion.

Re: THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST

Hi Eddie and Spookfan,

Linda...np!  After viewing your post I did think for a minute hey, I have missed out on something else and then realised what had happened :)

I think it is fair to agree that all children will play the odd prank.  I do not feel that the situation that this family found itself in started out as a prank by the children, I do agree that their mischeviousness did lend a helping hand, but they appeared to be honest children and did not deny it either.  Hiding a tape recorder under a bed is a fun prank for the children to play - letting of a bit of steam.  My concern for them as adults now is the effect that the situation may have had on them psychologically.  Jane does appear somewhat 'flat' and to some extent not recovered from the experience she had as a child.  I wonder if she still gets any help or therapy?

I do not know if this house in Enfield still exists - I don't know why but I thought it was pulled down.

Regarding the journalists, we will never know the truth.  I still consider it possible that the photos could have been affected - another form of proof for some of those who genuinely witnessed events.

I guess like everything else - all those concerned wished that they had done things differently - we always do with hindsight :)

Thanks

Sans

Re: THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST

Hello

I have not veiwed the programme concerned but have read the books "This House is Haunted" and "The Flying Cow", by Guy Lyon Playfair many times!

For those who seriously wish to investigate further "An Investigation of the Enfield Poltergeist" must now read "Poltergeist, a study in destructive haunting" by Colin Wilson with reference to chapter four "The Black Monk of Pontefract".

This is the path that serious investigators should follow.
