RAF Coltishall
As a family we used to holiday at Ludham Bridge every year from July to late August and as such got to know the area very well. One of my earliest memories was being taken to watch planes taking off and landing from a viewing gate overlooking the main runway at RAF Coltishall. As young children my sister and I were allowed to sit on the roof and watch as the Lightnings landed but darted inside the car when they took off due to the noise. On one visit (early 1970's) there didn't appear to be any movement at all until someone at the base decided to take a Spitfire up and gave us all a 10minute display of victory rolls, loops and flybys. The sound of this plane has stuck with me ever since and if I close my eyes I can still hear it.
