Signed band in running for unsigned bands comp?
|

Aren't Cortez a bit signed to be in the running for an unsigned bands competition? Forgive me if I'm being ignorant but the fact that they have a debut album out that most of Norwich has heard about, not to mention numerous gigs and publicity, would suggest that they're vastly overqualified for this competition. I was under the impression "the next big thing" was for artists who need the help to get overground, who can't afford studio time, who aren't getting gigs in the bigger venues, who need money toward equipment. I was obviously mistaken... this is just another popularity contest designed to make the promoters some money and drag the same tired old acts through our conciousness again.

Oh dear, the first comment to appear on this sluggish forum regarding this years competition is a negative one.
These are usually from a band member (or friend of a band member) that didn't make the grade and can't hide their disappointment. Alternatively maybe it's from someone who is completely misinformed about the local music scene, and is just taking a swipe because they don't know any better.
Everyone knows that Cortez are being pushed by NROne Records - a small non-genre label interested in pushing all things East Anglian. I also see you neglect to mention the single release of Le Tetsuo on the Mummywheresthemilkman label, a label that also features Lalia. Don't forget too both Deltaville and Overreal's appearance on the national charity release 'Best Of The Brickmakers' that was released on East Anglian Records.
Despite all this none of these bands are signed in the technical sense, but could all be the Next Big Thing. What the EDP and these smaller concerns all have in common is they all believe in the vast talent of the local music scene, and they are doing something about it.
Don't be a loner, climb aboard as there's room on this horse for two!
It's a wibbly wobbly world

"The Norwich scene is a cool scene and I came to this city to experience it. It is also an incredibly frustrating scene as it all seem to revolve around who you know and if you are out of the clique or offend a band you are shunned and ignored"
In a word Glen - bollocks! Having been in a Norwich band for the last eight years with moderate success (we've played the Waterfront and Arts Centre numerous times!) i would have to disagree with your comments. We have never have never had the luxury of having promoters or other bands as friends and have acheived everything we have with our demos. If you are finding it difficult to get gigs with your demo maybe it's just because it isn't very good!

A Point which has been said before. I've been on the Norwich music scene a number of years now and I've seen some really cool bands that never seem to get noticed Remember seeing stonersaurus supporting the GLC at the Arts centre? Mindbleed at the LCR, thought not? I don't think that it's important who the next big thing is, I've seen all the bands on the BGT II line up, and yes they all probably will be big, but this is because some of them conform to the blandness that the record labels need to sell shed loads of records. There are many bands who are really creative in Norwich (and some that are dreadful), but because they don't go with the mainstream, they are ignored, lost and forgotten. Lots of people would like the music if they could get it. Labels don't care about us, as long as we whore ourselves to the masses, until we all become like U2. Come on, do you really want that? We need to get back to the music. Think about the bands that made albums only not to have them released because they were not commercial enough, or all the bands that simply get dropped after being hyped by the media as the 'Next Big Thing'. John Peel created a scene in Norwich in the early eighties, because he allowed people to hear what was being created here. why don't we get back to this?? Lets embrace wha'ts going on and become the next Manchester, Liverpool or New York. Come on eight bands? Put on a festival EDP and kick out the Jams !!!!!!!! Also I have to say here that, has anyone heard Ashtray Heart by Cortez? If they get signed and release that @%$! mainstream their is no hope for the beautiful eclectic underground scene of Norwich, as the music industry will think thats the best Norwich has to offer. One of the reasons it's hard for bands to get signed in Norwich is because London labels can't be bothered to come see us play, yet we are also expected to crawl to them. Lets make them find us. Where is our Tony Wilson in Norwich, the EDP? I somehow think not. If someone just puts a bit more effort into helping the local scene itself we will be remembered not by how many records we sell but by our creative output in society, becoming successful on our own terms as people hear about what's going on. Norwich we rock!!! big up Horses Brawl

Dan I agree with what you say. I've managed to lose a paragraph in my last post, either thru my own fault by clicking back by accident or by being censored by the forum. I agree it is easy to get gigs and forge your own way round here, but certain doors only open if you know someone on the other side.

"Labels don't care about us, as long as we whore ourselves to the masses, until we all become like U2. Come on, do you really want that?" Thats right, keep making music no-one wants to listen to. However, if you accidentally come up with something lots of people like, you'll then become mainstream and turn into the thing you hate. A tragic paradox. Face it, it's not just the London labels that can't be bothered to come and see you play, not many folk in Norwich are interested in your mythical beautiful eclectic underground scene. if you want your band to get noticed, instead of whinging in forums and be-littling the artists talented enough to get noticed, use your computer to record a decent demo, make a website, hire a van, and get yourselves down to London. There's plenty of venues and diverse audiences who might actually like your stuff. Who knows, you may even get offered a deal which you can later turn down. Cathy Dennis rocks! Bono, The Edge, Adam & that other one.

Yeah I was right, I'm being censored by the forum. They don't like what I'm asserting so I'll not bother again.
