I pleaded ignorance at the start of my comment and have now been better informed. Wibble is obviously very up on the Norwich music scene, at least the overground side of it. However I stand by my assertion that this competition is unfairly weighted toward a certain type of band. The fact that you mention that so many of these bands have had singles released just adds emphesis to my point about underground bands being left behind (in my opinon). The Norwich scene is a cool scene and I came to this city to experience it. It is also an incredibly frustrating scene as it all seem to revolve around who you know and if you are out of the clique or offend a band you are shunned and ignored.
A Point which has been said before.
I've been on the Norwich music scene a number of years now and I've seen some really cool bands that never seem to get noticed Remember seeing stonersaurus supporting the GLC at the Arts centre? Mindbleed at the LCR, thought not? I don't think that it's important who the next big thing is, I've seen all the bands on the BGT II line up, and yes they all probably will be big, but this is because some of them conform to the blandness that the record labels need to sell shed loads of records.
There are many bands who are really creative in Norwich (and some that are dreadful), but because they don't go with the mainstream, they are ignored, lost and forgotten. Lots of people would like the music if they could get it.
Labels don't care about us, as long as we whore ourselves to the masses, until we all become like U2. Come on, do you really want that? We need to get back to the music. Think about the bands that made albums only not to have them released because they were not commercial enough, or all the bands that simply get dropped after being hyped by the media as the 'Next Big Thing'. John Peel created a scene in Norwich in the early eighties, because he allowed people to hear what was being created here. why don't we get back to this?? Lets embrace wha'ts going on and become the next Manchester, Liverpool or New York.
Come on eight bands? Put on a festival EDP and kick out the Jams !!!!!!!!
Also I have to say here that, has anyone heard Ashtray Heart by Cortez? If they get signed and release that @%$! mainstream their is no hope for the beautiful eclectic underground scene of Norwich, as the music industry will think thats the best Norwich has to offer.
One of the reasons it's hard for bands to get signed in Norwich is because London labels can't be bothered to come see us play, yet we are also expected to crawl to them. Lets make them find us. Where is our Tony Wilson in Norwich, the EDP? I somehow think not.
If someone just puts a bit more effort into helping the local scene itself we will be remembered not by how many records we sell but by our creative output in society, becoming successful on our own terms as people hear about what's going on.
Norwich we rock!!!
big up Horses Brawl
"Labels don't care about us, as long as we whore ourselves to the masses, until we all become like U2. Come on, do you really want that?"
Thats right, keep making music no-one wants to listen to. However, if you accidentally come up with something lots of people like, you'll then become mainstream and turn into the thing you hate. A tragic paradox.
Face it, it's not just the London labels that can't be bothered to come and see you play, not many folk in Norwich are interested in your mythical beautiful eclectic underground scene. if you want your band to get noticed, instead of whinging in forums and be-littling the artists talented enough to get noticed, use your computer to record a decent demo, make a website, hire a van, and get yourselves down to London. There's plenty of venues and diverse audiences who might actually like your stuff. Who knows, you may even get offered a deal which you can later turn down.
Cathy Dennis rocks!
Bono, The Edge, Adam & that other one.
