Sorry Christopher, was that the English Electric Canberra?

It was Wing Commander Ken Wallis who brought the first jet bomber squadron into service using that Canberra.

Keith ,thanks about the Canberra ,  it was my "airfix" years.
 We lived about 5 miles from Greenham Common. and during the summer holidays my elder brother dragged me off on our bikes to watch the bombers return from far lands.
Must say the "Hustler" was a good looker
You may remember that I posted a short YOUTUBE of the last flight of the Canberra, Much better pictures are of course available from the Marham website ......................The last flight ......over my garden,               cje49

After WW2 Ken Wallis was attached to SAC under Curtis Le May.

He flew this aircraft the B36 and was responsible for working up its role in SAC, he later worked up the first Canberra jet bomber squadron in the UK.

Strange that such a man still believes that there is an important role for his autogyro in the current situation in the Middle East.

Keith, thanks for the link to the pre-war Comet. A fine looking plane.A real classic from the days of design innovation.
I have to take the backseat in the face of your aircraft knowledge,photography, cars etc.

Thanks Chrostopher but I am sure there are others on here with at least an equal knowledge and skills.

If you read my link on the B36, you will find that there were two 'broken arrow' incidents with the type.

I wonder if they recovered both weapons?

Oh and nevermind might like to know that a B36 carried a 'critical' nuclear reactor in its bomb bay for tests on nuclear propulsion.

Bit worse than bombs that one.

One of the sites I use quite often makes it easy to upload photos. When replying to a message a box comes with the pad that says  Browse.   This brings up your photographs from Adobe, you click on the one you need and its done.  I think it would be a good idea on this site as it could create much more intererest as this thread has just been showing.  I tried Tinypics last evening Keith but wasn`t very plesed with what turned up.   Could the Team do anything along this line Celia ?  Dek.

What were your problems Dek?

You mention Adobe, do you use their file format?

I have used tiny on here with no problems including video mpg and sound wav.

I use all sorts of editing programs including Adobe but for this I used Coral PSP X. saved as .jpeg

It has a simple image resize, that allows the pixel height and width to be set.

You must click on the stored thumbnail to enlarge to the size in tiny before copy/paste though.

I do not know if the tiny site will handle VOB files from DVD,s or surround sound files, I may try it.

Adobe has a brilliant set of conversions, so it should be no problem for you.

I think the EDP site has limited storage space on the server but it would be nice to simply upload.

Keith,  Going back on this thread a wee bit.   I now have it official ( from the local press) that the airship that I saw in 1930, was in fact the R101 G. FAAW.    This was reported in the local news at the time.  So this should put the record straight. Dek.

Small world, Christopher.
I spent my school years living in Newbury (Park House sec modern), and Greenham was my playground too. The woods round there were great (before the 'peace protesters' ruined it), and I learned to ride motor bikes round the old part across the road. I have fond memories of the open days/tattoo on the base.

Thanks Dek, as the R101 only made one flight, you must have seen her for the last time.

It was because she only made the one flight that I queried your statement.

Many people are unaware of just how many airships were in service around that time, so it would have been easy to mistake one for another.

East Anglia was the center of Airship development.

And could be again if we had the snide here to make airship popular again. I'd rather sit in one of those for two hours that use a plane, wouldn't you?
 
Was the comet not the pre design of the now fatally flawed Vulcan fleet? why can they not buy a few planes that actually don't fall to bits of old age? nevermind

If I remember correctly, the Vulcan design wasn't 'fatally flawed'.
The original design was for a high level bomber, and it was superb at this. Unfortunately, as times change so do tactics and situations. High level was no longer a safe option, and it was required to fly fast at low level. The much thicker air translated into a far higher stress on the airfrme, particularly the wing roots, which led to fatigue and cracks.
As for falling to bits of old age, that is a symptom of successive governments (particularly Labour) lack of spending on military hardware, so platforms are pushed well beyond their design life. Think Buccaneer, Canberra, Jaguar - all great in their day, but unsupportable in their later lives. I was part of the Jaguar/Canberra support team at the Defence Logistics Organisation (as was), and it was a real struggle keeping a viable fleet as more cracks appeared, fatigue life was reached and spare parts vanished.
