The Bridewell Museum

OK. The main Bridewell Museum thread started on the 'Lets Go Hunting' thread. I feel though, with any future investigations of the Bridewell.

The Bridewell Museum warrants its own thread, do to how active it is. Only time will tell how this thread develops.

Best wishes

Eddie

Re: The Bridewell Museum
As a Norwich lass I have been going on visits to Bridewell Museum all my life.I have always noticed there to be a strong spirit energy in the upstairs room(with twin staircases either side). There is a feeling of child spirits there.I think more then 4 or 5,under 12 years old.I feel like that area was a place where childern would have slept(& died).I have not seen any of the children. But I think I heard one once when I was about 10 years old?
I was on a day out with my family & I was looking at the shoe display that was housed in that part of the museum.I heard a child's voice behind me say "hello".But when I turned to look there was no one there! This never worried me too much as I had always had things like that happen to me all my life for as long as I can remember.I never said anything at the time, but told my sisters later on.

Re: The Bridewell Museum

Hello

These are my initial findings, I will still be investigating further, regarding the Norwich "Bridewell".

Background info.

Bridewell Palace, London was an official residence of Henry VIII which then later became a "Poorhouse and Prision".

The term "Bridewell" was adopted firstly by prisons in London which housed;

"Homeless Children and for the punishment of disorderly women!"

The "Bridewell" Institutions appeared all over English cities soon after and the term usually refered to a cities main detention facility close to a courthouse for minor offenders and our "unfortunates!"

Brief History of Norwich Bridewell.

1325-   Original building built by Geoffrey De Salle.

1386-   William Appleyard, future Mayor of Norwich (1403) enlarged the building.

1538-   City of Norwich purchased building for use as a reform centre.

"Brydewell to keep and stay ydle persons to somme honest worke and labour!"

Tramps, Beggars and Prostitutes were put to work cutting wood and grinding malt.

Fact or fiction

A Human Treadmill may have been installed, or re-installed, in 1570 to grind malt as form of punishment.

18th C   Bridewell converted to conventional prision.

1751      Fire destroyed building??????

1828      All inmates tranfered to new prision built near to St Giles Gate (on the site of the now Roman Catholic Cathedral).

1890      Building became a leather warehouse and soon after a tobacco factory.

1896      Shoe Factory which specialises in "childrens shoes and boots".  Childrens shoes and boots made until 1923 most displayed may have never been worn.

1923      Henry Nicholas Holmes, childrens shoe and boot manufacturer forms "consortium" to purchase the building to open a museum.

24/10/1925   Duke of York officially opens the museum.

Reported Hauntings

Apart from the edp24 forum reports there is, as far I currently know, no reported incidents of paranormal activity.

Further investigations

In the early days before the "Poor Laws" the church was the only refuge for our "unfortunates" an issue worth following.

"Wish me luck in my investigations concerning the Dominican Frairs (St Andrews Hall) the black monks!"

Happy hunting

N

Re: The Bridewell Museum

Thanks very much N

I'm very impressed. Well done

I will agree & that is the strange part. The Bridewell does not have any historical ghost activity attached to it. Which is so strang concidering the feel to the place, the cold spots & unexplained breezes. Not to mention the young girl.

I was told by the staff of spirit activity at the Bridewell but they seem to not want to advertise outside. Not that they are against other people doing so

The thing that I did find, was that the staff are very friendly towards ghost hunters & are only too happy to talk about the subject. What I get from them is, they are as interested in the subject as us the ghosthunters.

Good luck with your future searches & thanks so much.

Best wishes

Eddie

Re: The Bridewell Museum
Hi all.....jitters definately got the jitters at Thetford...god that place sounds creepy!    Hi Eddie...i would love to get to Norwich again on saturday but it may be a bit later than 11am...ok?  Yes i would like to look in the Crystal shop before or after visit..whichever...amy has found a piece of Amethyst that i gave her years ago..i suppose this would do the job of protection wouldnt it?  I met a lady once who had lots of different crystals displayed on a table, but she asked us not to touch them as they can be affected??? Is it right that you have to wash them etc? does anyone know?

Re: The Bridewell Museum

Hi Linda

Yep that is correct. If other people handle them their energy can affect them.

After a crystal has been used it needs to be cleansed and recharged. There are many ways; if you are the only one using a particular crystal then u can just hold the crystal in your hands and visualise bright white light around the crystal, this will cleanse it and recharge it. You can rinse it under running water to cleanse it (make sure it isnt water soluable) dry it, then leave it on a windowsill in the moonlight to charge it. Some leave them on amethyst clusters to cleanse and recharge. I personally pop them in my singing bowl and ring it, the vibrations cleanse and recharge them.
