Recognising excellence
Norfolk Waste Partnership has presented a series of awards to individuals, groups and companies in the county for waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
The Chairman of Norfolk County Council, John Baskerville, held a reception in January at the Archive Centre at County Hall to recognise and celebrate achievements in Norfolk in waste minimisation.
He paid tribute to the environmental achievements of the winners.
"Every person in this room has contributed throughout the year to the achievement of our goals. I would like to say a massive thank you to you all," he said.
"These people work with a genuine passion and belief in what they do and they have made a real difference to people's lives in Norfolk."
Chairman of Norfolk Waste Partnership, Barry Coleman, said: "We promote the three Rs; to reduce, reuse and recycle and we as a community have got to take these values to heart more than anything to help the environment and reduce the amount of landfill."
The winners for 2005 were Amy Irvine, of the Waste Resources Action Programme, and Student Force Recycling Advisors (for Communication and Promotional Campaigns), Liz McGowan, Burston Primary School, Neatherd Community High School, St William's Primary School and Stoke Holy Cross Primary School (for Educational Work) and Newborn Nappy Laundry Service, Norwich City Council IT staff, Notcutts Garden Centre, ORM King's Lynn Ltd and Parkers Skip Hire Ltd (for Waste Minimisation).
In the category of Community Reuse/Recycling Organisations or Initiatives, the winners were the residents of Dersingham, Mr T Hall, the HAND Partnership and Norfolk Freecycle and the Best Recycling Centre was Ketteringham.
The Business Waste Minimisation and Recycling category was won by Anglian Flexible Coatings, Pearsons (Thetford) Ltd and Ecotech Centre Ltd.
Stuart Weaver, manager of the Ecotech Centre, at Swaffham, said the centre had received the award for a number of steps they had taken. These included reducing paper by doing short runs of leaflets and information, using recycled materials where possible, reusing office waste, sorting paper and card, glass, cans and plastic for recycling, encouraging visitors to recycle and using compost in the garden.
"At Ecotech we work to promote the careful use of our world's resources and ways of minimising our damage to the environment," he explained.
"Reducing, reusing and recycling are key to this and we promote them through our formal education programme, providing information for
informal visitors and by looking at the way in which we at Ecotech do things.
"We are delighted to receive this award and hope it will encourage others as well."
