The History and Future of Get Equipped

The Get Equipped School Competition is now in its 7th year of helping local schools in the area.

To date we have given away a staggering £150,000 worth of sports equipment to schools in need, with the added bonus of allowing the winning schools the freedom to choose what they wish to spend the money on.  This flexibility has allowed for a diverse range of equipment to be bought depending on the individual need of the school.  ‘Get Equipped’ money has paid for everything from new playground markings and basic football strips to climbing walls and state of the art gymnasium equipment.  In turn, this has allowed Norfolk children to enjoy sport in new ways.  Our aim is to encourage children to explore the exciting world of sport by helping schools get the vital equipment they need.  The Mall, Norwich has been the sponsor of Get Equipped for the last four years.

Get Equipped has changed in 7 years to try and give school the best possible results.  The main change came in 2005 with the decision to split the £25,000 prize fund to try and aid the schools that enter.  With so many Schools in desperate need of sport equipment it was decided that we should changed the five winning schools prize fund from £5,000 to £3,000 leaving us with £10,000 which we could split to all the schools that entered.  This has given an average of nearly £100 to every school that entered, hopefully enough to fund some smaller equipment. In 2007 Get Equipped changed again allowing even more winners, again by splitting the prize fund.  The 5 winning areas stay the same but we are now having a Winner and a Runner-up for each area, with each School getting £2,000 and £1,000 respectively.  This allowed 10 schools to benefit greatly from Get Equipped and still give £10,000 to all the schools that have entered, meaning everyone’s a winner.

Get Equipped is evolving again this year to allow you more time to collect tokens.  We have made the decision to move Get Equipped from the summer months to the earlier start of March to allow the school to have more contact with their pupils during the collection period.  Hopefully this will allow more schools to participate in Get Equipped and make the token collection aspect of the promotion easier.
