To enter, schools had to collect 2,000 special vouchers printed in the EDP between June and September, and say in no more than 250 words what they would spend the money on and why.
Gareth Nicholls, assistant marketing manager of the EDP, said: “We have had such an overwhelming response to Get Equipped this year.

“In the history of Get Equipped, this is the first time judging has had to take place over two days. We are really proud to be able to offer support to Norfolk and Suffolk schools promoting sport in a fun, exciting way. The Mall, Norwich, have continued their involvement with our great competition, following their pledge last year to support local sporting heroes of the future. This year entries showed an incredibly high standard and gave us a tough challenge to choose the winners”

Victoria Haverson, from The Mall, said they were thrilled to be involved with Get Equipped for the third year running and were looking forward to visiting the winning schools to see their plans for the money come to life.

Quotes from Past Winners

“The children were over the moon to receive the money and they helped to decide what it was spent on - we added a climbing tower to our trim trail which has really encouraged the children to get active.  The success we enjoyed … encouraged the school into further fund raising activities that have benefited our P.E. department”
Jackie Loughlin, Nightingale First School Winner 2006

“We are very excited that we have won such a fantastic amount of money … we have not had a lot of equipment before, and in the last few years it has just worn out.  The children are so excited and thrilled”
Trudi Sharred – Knowland Grove First School Winner 2005

“We are elated to win – it will really improve the quality of the children’s PE experience”
Kevin Pinnock – Rockland All Saints Primary School Winner 2006

“It has been fantastic … before, we would just have the kids running around the playing field with a few hoops and bean bags, but not the equipment to really motivate and excite them …we would also have to charge … but now we have the equipment, we may be able to offer it free.”
Marion Attwooll – Burnham Market Primary Winner 2005

“The children were over the moon.  The money makes such a great difference to a small school and is a great achievement for the children.”
Sally Williams – Great Dunham Primary Winner 2006

“We are just completely overwhelmed … better equipment and smart kit will hopefully help raise morale and improve attitudes in sport”
Alison Cropley – Flegg High Winner 2005

“We are so surprised and delighted when we discovered we had won.  It shows being small is not a barrier to achievement and that by working together as a community we can achieve anything”
Louise Hinton – Hapton Primary Winner 2005

“Without winning the competition it would not have been possible to consider getting the climbing frame … the children just love being outside …they will love having more things to do and this will encourage them”
Gemma Scargill - Sheringham Community Primary Winner 2006

“This will put us in a strong position to get our specialist sports status because it further enhances the work we do in the community”
Cheryl Crawford and Jon Platten - Alderman Peel High Winner 2005

“It will buy the basics such as badminton posts and nets.  At last we can get the hall up and running.”
Jim Hall – John Grant Special School, Caister Winner 2006

“We have not decided yet exactly what we will get as it is all too exciting, but it is going to a make such a huge difference”
Lynsay Barratt – Earthsea Centre, Honingham Winner 2006
